About this activity

Are you familiar with the food of the nomadic herdsmen in Mongolian grasslands? Their primary stable is mostly products from their livestock, meat and milk. Those simple ingridients are processed with a surprising range of methods combining the use of vegetables and hand made noodles. You will learn how to cook them and take away the skills!

Sample dishes of traditional Mongolian cuisine:

  • Buuz: a type of Mongolian steamed dumpling filled with meat and an example of authentic Mongolian cuisine. This dish is traditionally enjoyed at home on Tsagaan Sar, the Mongolian New Year. These days, it is also offered at restaurants and small cafes.
  • Khorkhog: a barbecue dish of Mongolian cuisine. Khorkhog (horhog) is made by cooking pieces of meat inside of a container filled with hot stones and water and is often also heated from the outside of the container.
  • Khuushuur: a type of meat pastry or dumpling popular in Mongolia and similar to Russian chiburekki. The meat, either beef or mutton, is grounded and mixed with onion (or garlic), salt and other spices.
