About this activity
Choose from a morning or afternoon departure and leave your Vienna hotel by private car or minivan, depending on how many people are in your group. Then, relax during the short drive to the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace Gardens (Schlosspark Schoenbrunn).
Schönbrunn Palace is a UNESCO-listed Baroque palace that was once the summer residence of the powerful Habsburg family. Originally designed as a hunting lodge, empress Maria Theresa — the mother of Marie Antoinette — employed an architect to remodel it into its current form in the mid-18th century.
After hearing of the palace's history from your private guide, enter the palace independently and get a glimpse into the sheer splendor of the formal state rooms. Admire the frescoes, well-preserved furnishings and elaborate gilded details of the imperial complex, which was eventually passed on to the Republic of Austria following the end of the monarchy in 1918.
Take a break for a revitalizing tea or coffee (own expense), then explore the gardens independently. Meander around the landscaped lawns and wander up to the Gloriette, an impressive arcade structure at the top of Schönbrunn Hill. From here, enjoy glorious views of the palace below and Vienna beyond it. As you stroll, you might also pass by numerous statues, fountains and even a hedge maze.
After walking through the gardens, meet your guide back at the palace and hop back into the vehicle for the short drive back to your Vienna hotel.
